Search Engine Optimisation

This is probably the most important way you can promote your website through the Internet. Search Engine Optimisation is the placement of keywords, key phrases and meta tags throughout your website content and should be done correctly before your website is submitted to the search engines. Selecting the keywords and phrases to use throughout your website can be as easy as asking yourself what you would type in a search engine if you were looking for your service or product. This is a good starting point but there are also many other keywords that you can choose to use. Words that are of ‘high demand’ and ‘low supply’ will also work at getting higher rankings by search engines. Search engines also place significance on your domain’s age, it’s site authority, links and the content it contains. Page content that is bolded, linked, or in a heading tag can possibly be given more weighting than normal text.

You can use the following keyword finder tool to help find the best keywords for you to use on your website. Word Tracker is well acclaimed as the ‘ultimate tool’ for increasing traffic to your website.

5 SEO Tips

  • Your Title Tag <title>Search engine optimisation</title> should have between 5 and 12 words (This is generally weighted more than any other text on the site)
  • Your Meta Description Tag <meta name=”description”content=”de scription”/> should have between 5 and 20 words
  • Your Meta Keyword Tags <meta name=”keywords”content=”key, words”/> should have no more than 50 words (This is generally weighted less than the content on the page)
  • The meta keywords tags should have the words contained in the title, description and the content of the page
  • Try to use heading tags when possible

Building Inbound Links

One-way inbound links are the best links you can accumulate for the best SEO results. The quality of these websites that are linking back to you is of the utmost importance. Having many websites of low quality linking back to you will do little for your SEO ranking but get the links from high ranking, good quality and relevant websites and your own ranking will increase. Sites that rank highly include those such as the best directories like DMOZ.org, the top blogger directories, sites that have a high Google Page Rank and other distinguished sites with a good reputation. A tip is to search Google and see what sites they are ranking highly, then use Google Page Rank to get the actual ranking position.
Create a website that others will want to link back to. Great quality content will ensure this. Reciprocal links are useful but again only use websites of high quality.

Pay Per Click

Pay per click is a way to advertise your website on hosts eg; google through their pay per click system called Google Adwords
and through Yahoo – Yahoo! Advertising
The ads you place on these hosts are ranked calculated on how much you are willing to pay for the ad on each search phrase. (The ranking order in Google is a combination of the bid amount you choose and the popularity of the ad.) This form of advertising enables you to buy your position in the search results pages for the search phrases you have chosen for your business. You are only charged when someone clicks through to your website.

This is a targeted way to advertise and can yield good leads and sales.

Publishing a Newsletter

Writing your own newsletter is a good way to get your site out to the masses. This can result in inbound links and if you allow others to repost then more people will read your information and visit your website. Regular visitors are what you need and if you give them a reason to return to your website – via an offer or information in the newsletter – your readership and the trust of those readers will grow.

  • A good newsletter relates to the readership in a familiar and friendly style.
  • Send out your newsletter on a regular basis, monthly is good.
  • Always follow the same format to build your branding and reliability.
  • Allow readers to remark or comment on your information.
  • Ensure the content is relevant and mistake free!
  • Post regular competitions to encourage interactivity.
  • Use surveys and polls.

We use and recommend MailChimp as they are easy to use and very reliable. You can find out more about them here: Powered by MailChimp

Writing and submitting articles

Writing articles for article sites or blogs can increase your ranking on the search engine sites and help establish a reputation as an expert in your field. Article publication also increases your branding exposure. Keep the content of each article informative and unique, don’t post the same article over and over and keep your keyword density to about 2-5%. Some article sites allow you to include HTML links in the articles, enabling you to link keyword phrases to the relevant page on your website. This is a highly valued link for SEO purposes.

Here are 5 tips on article writing

1. Use An Attention Grabbing Headline

The attention grabbing headline is the most important step in getting people to read your article. ‘How to’ and ’10 ways to’ articles rank high in readership and others will post these types of articles on their websites.

2. Keep the Content Simple

Keeping the text simple and easy to read will encourage more people to post your article. Don’t use technical jargon or large words, and don’t write long, drawn out articles. Keeping the article to under 800 words is preferable.

3. Use Short Sentences and Paragraphs

Keep the text interesting to the eye by using short, sharp sentences and bulleted points for easy reference. Short paragraphs also keep interest. People’s attention spans can be around 10 seconds so you have to capture their interest early. Edit your work thoroughly!

4. Make your Article Interesting

Write your article in a friendly manner using language that you use everyday, but don’t use slang. Try to write like you are talking directly to your audience. Give the article personality and warmth by injecting a little of your own personal experiences.

5. Edit Correctly

To help your articles be republished over and over you need them to be error free and grammatically correct. Articles that are rife with mistakes will not get republished.

Submit your articles to many of the Article Directories we have listed for you.

Add a blog to your site

Adding a blog to your website helps increase your search engine rankings as the information is constantly changing and being updated which search engines like.

It’s a great way to keep your customers or clients informed about your business, the industry or just in general. You can post your articles here and can help keep a ‘human’ element to your business. It’s a good way to let people know of any changes in your business, new products, announcements and to build your reputation and your customer’s trust in you and in the industry.

Blogs can be promoted through your social networks, your articles, through your newsletters and general email correspondence.

Blogs are good for any size business and can make the difference between businesses.
