Is anxiety leading you to keep things you shouldn’t?

 

We all get into having a bit too much stuff every now and then. It’s natural. But for some of us, hanging on to things and becoming attached to them holds a deeper significance. It means they’re having a fear or anxiety that’s actually driving that need to buy.

Maybe you’re the type of person who is constantly fearing disasters, and stocking up on emergency kits. Maybe you’re hyper focused on being the absolute perfect hostess…and can’t stop piling the knick knacks. There’s plenty of ways that fear can drive purchases, and this article is going to discuss how to acknowledge that fear, and how to deal with it, to save your home and your pocketbook.

  1. Acknowledge your fear. “The first step is admitting you have a problem…” this has become a cliché but it arose from truth. Admitting you have fears that may be driving your purchasing is the first true step to dealing with them. Try to understand what the fear is, so that you can better and more specifically address it.
  2. Remain grounded in the fear until you understand it. Understanding that you’re going to have fear from time to time does not mean you have to be ruled by it. Many people make fear worse, or give it more power than it should have, because they constantly try to run from it. Rather than run from it, we encourage you to remain with the fear – at least until you understand it cannot hurt you. Take a deep breath, and get ready to move on.
  3. Learn to relax with the fear. Even in moments when our body tries to fill us with fear, we can take a deep breath and relax. We can look at a fear and realize that though it may be natural, it does not have to rule. Accept the fear that you have, address it, and move on.
  4. Understand your fear. Become your own analyst. Analyze your fear. What does it feel like? How long does it last? What makes it go away?

Once you understand that you have a fear, and what it is of, you can begin to for a plan to dealing with it that doesn’t involve running out and giving in to it. This is going to save you from impulsively giving in to the fear. This is going to restore your sense of peace, and save a lot of heartache.
