Saving on Cleaning

Saving on Cleaning

Cleaning products can add up to a good proportion of your yearly costs in the home, but they don’t have to. Making your own cleaning products is of course the best way to save hundreds of dollars but it’s not the only way! We’ve got some savvy ways to reduce your costs and we hope they help you with your overall savings plan.

As with any of our homemade cleaning recipes it is up to you to determine if they are safe to use with your family, as some people are sensitive to different ingredients.

We recommend you stock your cleaning cupboard with these basic items and they will clean your whole home with the recipes we provide. I buy my ingredients from Woolworths, Coles, Bunnings and Heirloom Body Care.

  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • White vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Methylated spirits
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Borax
  • Washing soda
  • Castille liquid soap
  • Citric acid
  • Essential oils
  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3%

To get you started here’s my instant ‘go to’ all purpose cleaner. It’s so cheap and easy to mix up you’ll wish you knew about it years ago! Here’s the recipe.

  • 1/2 cup cloudy ammonia
  • 1/2 cup methylated spirits

Add the two above ingredients to a 500ml spray bottle and top up with water – shake and presto! You have a cleaner for your benchtops and tiles, a streak free window and mirror cleaner and a great all round general cleaner. Try it – you’ll love how easy it is!

I use this cleaner every night to clean the kitchen after dinner. I clean the perspex splashback with it, the glass cooktop, the benchtops and the cupboards doors!
