Many people are concerned about the chemicals contained in commercially available carpet cleaners, while others are concerned about the cost.

Some manufacturers state you should only use their cleaners in the machine but if you decide to make your own anyway, here are some to try. Be sure to do a spot test first in an inconspicuous area.

Bulk Carpet Cleaning Solution
10 cups of water
½ cup Bicarbonate of Soda
½ cup Borax
½ cup Washing Soda
1 cup White Vinegar
1 cup Ammonia
In a bucket add the water then slowly mix in the bicarbonate of soda, borax and washing soda. Then add the vinegar, it will bubble up. Once the bubble have subsided stir until all the ingredients are dissolved. Add the ammonia and stir well.
You can add essential oils to the cleaning solution to release a pleasant aroma, as well as adding the benefits of the essential oils themselves. Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Ylang Ylang and Lavendar will all work well.
Here’s a carpet shampoo recipes used by many carpet cleaner machine owners.
½ cup Liquid Laundry detergent
½ cup Liquid Laundry Softener
1 cup Ammonia
4 Litres Water
Mix all the ingredients together well and test on your carpet in an inconspicuous spot.
If your carpet’s colour was not affected, then store the mixture. This will be enough for several cleanings.
Shake before using.
Use ¼ cup in the machines reservoir and top up with hot water.
Many professional carpet cleaners recommend using plain hot water in your carpet cleaning machine because residues left after using carpet shampoos can trap dirt. You may be surprised how clean your carpet will actually be with just hot water and save yourself some money too!
White vinegar can be used in your carpet cleaning machine. Test some first in an inconspicuous spot for colour fastness.
To use, pour one cup of white vinegar into the machines reservoir and fill the rest with hot water. This easy recipe should get your carpet clean without using chemical products.
If you have heavy stains, you can spray equal parts of white vinegar and water (in a spray bottle) to pretreat stains. Then after about an hour, use the machine with vinegar, as outlined above.
