Aromatherapy has been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years, and for good reason. Did you know that scents have the power to effect your mood? That’s right, that’s what I said, they can relieve stress, relax you, and even help you get to sleep at night should you so wish.

Aromatherapy bases itself off of the uses of essential oils, essentially oils that our body has been designed to respond to. As we respond, we get to see all the great effects to our mood, to our mind, and just to the smell of the place (haha).

To that effect, this article is going to go through just a few of my favourite recipes for homemade linen spray and aromatherapy spray that can really improve the lives of most of us, just by sneaking a whiff every now and then.

Aromatherapy Spray

-20 drops of essential oil

-1 ounce of distilled water or vodka (for preservation of scent)

-Something to contain the scent (spray bottles are ideal).

Here’s the easy part, combine the ingredients in the bottle. That’s it. Shake it up and you have an easy to use spray for the house that can energize, relax, or destress you.

Scent combinations and effects

If you’re new to aromatherapy, you could be wondering about the effects of specific oils. Consider the following information I’ve collected to get you started.

Battling the blues? Try 20 drops of grapefruit, or a blend of 12 drops of orange and 8 drops of grapefruit.

Seem to be tired all the time? Try a combination of rosemary and bergamot (12 and 8 drops respectively), or pepper mint and lemon (10 and 10), or even an exotic mix of bergamot, orange, and grapefruit (10, 5, and 5). These little sprays are great for revving your engines and getting that energy level right back up!

Can’t get to sleep? Try combining 15 drops of chamomile with 5 drops of lavender; 10 drops of chamomile, 5 drops of sage, and 5 drops of bergamot; or 10 drops of rosemary and 10 drops of lavender. Any one of these mixes will have you off to beddy-bye land in no time.

Warnings about aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is entirely safe, and has no ill effects when used properly. However, users should be careful and keep the following tips in mind to avoid improper use:

  • Avoid deeply coloured oils if you want to avoid linen stains
  • Know what you’re using, look it up before blending it into a scent
  • Store oils in a clean, dry place away from sunlight

Enjoy the relaxation!
